A Quick Update

Hey gang,

In case you missed it, GALIA elected a new president and web admin during last nights meeting. The new exec for this year is as follows:

President: Shalyn Martin
Vice President: Tyson Skriver
Secretary: Meg Johnston
Treasurer: Braden Yamamoto
Web Admin: Josh Willems

If you see these fabulous folks around campus feel free to introduce yourselves and give them a great big hug!

We've got a ton of stuff planned for this year, so be sure to keep yourselves updated and check the website, facebook group, and google calendar regularly.

Don't forget that October 11 2009 is NATIONAL COMING OUT DAY. Check out http://www.hrc.org/issues/coming_out/13476.htm for more info and join the Facebook Event page http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=163697758695&index=1

One other thing, during the last meeting it was suggested that the monthly meeting dates be changed. In order to get a better feel for what day works best for the majority we have created a poll. So, go to http://www.doodle.com/mgxnt5cknb2pxamn and tell us what works for you.
No changes will be made until results are in and we can discuss at the next meeting.

Okay, I think that is all I have for now. Have a great Thanksgiving!

Welcome back! (Updated)

Hello GALIA!

Welcome back everyone! I was just sitting here eating Chef Boyardee ravioli with bacon, sipping an A&W root beer when I thought, "Hey! I want to welcome our new members and welcome back our returning members." I hope you're as excited as I am for this coming year. We have some big events planned, like our monthly movie nights and the popular Queeraoke. The book club is returning this year with more fascinating gems to read. Also expect a lot of new events, such as a garage sale fund raiser, 80s bowling night, a talent show, and a series of workshops to help educate our campus and community on queer topics.

The exec is as follows:

President: Shalyn Martin
Vice President: Tyson Skriver
Secretary: Meg Johnston
Treasurer: Braden Yamamoto
Web Administator: Josh Willems

Give them a hug when you see them in the hallway. :)

That's all for now. Be sure to send us any suggestions you might have for events or let us know if you would like to get involved. We're always in need of volunteers!

Have a great year everyone! I'm going to finish my breakfast of champions.

HUGE!

Hi friends!

We haven't been posting a lot of blogs other than upcoming events. But I hear that some people are keeping up to speed with the club through this thing, so I'd like to post yet another blog about our events! These are all very important! You're gonna want to read 'em all.

First of all, I am extremely happy to announce that we has been named Club of the Year! We don't quite know what this means, but all we know is it's really exciting! Actually, we're very thankful to be recognized for all the hard work we've all done this year. So congratulations everyone!

(This is taken directly from the Facebook event)
We finally have the approval to paint our logo in the tunnel! We need your help as it will never be finished if we do it alone. Here's what's happening:
Friday, April 3rd, beginning at noon, we are going to begin painting the background.
Saturday, April 4th, beginning at noon, we will proceed to paint the people.
Sunday, April 5th, beginning at noon, we will finish up by painting our glorious logo before our movie night begins!
If you are able to help, feel free to show up! But please email the club to say when you can help, or call Tyson at 403-795-8949 or message him on Facebook.
Please plan to help out! This painting will be an image that will remind us of a year when amazing things happened, and also for all the fantastic things to come, and that you are a part of that magic! It is an image of queer visibility, and of acceptance on the U of L campus. It is an image showing that we are here to stay!

For our monthly movie night on April 5th, starting at 6:00pm, we will be watching two very important films, Milk and For The Bible Tells Me So, with a discussion to follow. This event is free, and please bring your own snacks and drinks. Feel free to invite everyone you think may be interested! The more the merrier!

We will be holding another fantastic meeting the night of Monday March 6th, at 6:30pm. This one is very different though, and very important that you attend. At this meeting we would like to ratify early in order to put on events as a club during the summer, and we are going to be holding elections for the 2009/10 executive. All paid members please attend and bring your membership cards.

Queeraoke is returning to the Mix on April 17th beginning at 10:00pm! On the final Friday of classes at the U of L plan to sing away the spring semester. Invite all your friends! And remember, cheap martinis and queer company, all you need on a Friday night!

And of course, a reminder to prepare submissions for Rhino in the Room, look forward to Pretty, Witty, and Gay, and look out for Lethbridge Pride happening in June!

Thanks for making it to the end! See you all very soon!

-Tyson-

Update!

The GALIA Elections are coming up at our next meeting on Monday April 6th at 6:30pm in SU180. The positions are currently:
President
Vice President
Secretary
Treasurer

There is a possibility of adding on a position that deals with all web based elements, but that requires a change to our constitution, which we will also have to vote on.

http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=70158553618#/event.php?eid=72372316304 As per usual we are holding our monthly movie night and we hope you will all be there. We will be showing Milk and for the bible tells me so.

Get out and March against Racism on March 21st, noon, at city hall. We all need to work together towards equality and show solidarity for each other!

Our very own queer film festival!
Rhino in the Room International Queer Film Festival
Held right here in Lethbridge! Open to Everyone!http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/group.php?gid=60074233922&ref=ts

Worth taking a look at...

http://www.amnestyusa.org/lgbt-human-rights/country-information/page.do?id=1106576

This is an interactive map of the legal status of queer individuals all over the world. It's pretty sad actually. Enjoy your rights where you have them, we're damn lucky to exist in a country where we will not be imprisoned or executed, but that doesn't mean the struggle is over.

Queer-aoke?

On Friday March 6th starting at 10 PM at the Mix we are setting up karaoke! We hope to make this last all night until 2 AM. We're getting very excited to finally be able to show off our mad skills without singing into a Rock Band microphone. There's no need for your band to save you should things go horribly wrong. This is karaoke, the real thing!

Invite all your friends and family. The more people who come the better. If you already RSVPd on the Facebook group and said MAYBE please change that to ATTENDING because if people see that you are actually coming then perhaps more people will come and we'll rock the Mix right off its foundation. Even if you don't plan to sing, it will still be a mad night of entertainment.

So Gay.

http://www.new.facebook.com/profile.php?id=511582562#/event.php?eid=51727564646

Pretty Witty and Gay is one of the most eagerly anticipated events in both the Lethbridge Theatre scene and the Lethbridge Gay scene. They're looking for actors, dancers, singers, poets, writers and everything else! All you need to do to submit is send your name, the title of your piece and a brief description in by Sunday, March 21. This event is open to everyone, and everything: dances, songs, scenes, monologues, poetry, performance art, art installations. The only stipulations are that the piece be about sexual diversity, and not exceed 10 minutes. The show dates are Saturday April 18 and Sunday April 19 at 8:00pm in the David Spinks Theatre, with a brief technical rehearsal during the day on saturday. For more information or to submit a piece contact sean.guist@uleth.ca

Oh and is anyone getting sick of the posts about Rhino in the Room? well, I guess you can just read the previous posts rather than me posting again and again, over and over about the film festival... which is incredibly important...which you should get involved with or make a film for... and is basically the only event of this kind in southern alberta... just sayin! Don't miss out! XD

Queer Book Club:

GALIA is excited to be hosting a Queer Book Club! The book club will focus its attention on written works dealing with sexuality, queer life, transgender and much more. The first meeting is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday March 4. We will be discussing “Self” by Yann Martel (author of “Life of Pi”), a fictional autobiography of an individual whose gender and orientation change multiple times throughout life. Humorous, poignant and affecting, the novel explores the nature of sex and attraction and offers something for readers of all identifications. Copies of the book are available at Chapters and the U of L Bookstore (in limited numbers) for approx. $19.95. The meeting will be held at the University, with a room to be announced at a later date. Odd-itions specifics!

Okay so those of you that are looking forward to putting a performance together for The "Valentines is such a drag... Dance n' Show!" here is the info!

So they are taking place this Friday and Saturday (January 30th and 31st) from 4:00 pm till 6:00 pm on both days. Now the location might be tricky for those of you who are not familiar with fine arts areas of the school. The room is W-480, its a gym-like, dancing rehearsal space in the fine arts section of U-Hall.

So how you get there is: Place yourself in the atrium (level six, U-Hall),
walk down the stairs (Centre for Fine Arts), to level five, you will see
the University Theatre and the University Recital Hall, the box office
etc. Then walk down the stairs again, to level 4! Immediately to your
right, you will see a sign above a set of doors that says something about
rooms and rehearsal spaces, walk under that sign and into the hallway
beyond, at the very end of that hallway the last room will be "Rehearsal
Space: W-480" and we will put a sign outside the door :)

Costumes are optional, but please bring your music OR if you have simply the desire to perform we'll see where we can fit you in! Look forward to seeing you there!

-GALIA

Friday and Saturday! Now, even if you have no idea what to do but are still interested in performing or being a part, come on out! More details to come soon, location TBA!
If there is a song you are interested in using, be sure to bring it along!

This GALIA event is being co-hosted with GALA/LA in the new downtown hall on February 14th! There will be a silent auction, performances and one helluva' lot of dancing!
